After completing a HND in Civil Engineering (2002) and degree in Mathematics (2005), Paul conducted PhD research in applied statistics for a thesis entitled "Statistical techniques for extreme wave condition analysis in coastal design". This work was supervised by Professor Dominic Reeve, Dr Julian Stander and Dr Yuzhi Cai at the University of Plymouth.

Between October 2008 and July 2009, Paul was a statistical research fellow (Independent consultant) for the Fetal Medicine Foundation (London) under the supervision of Professor Dave Wright. This role looked at novel pre-natal screening algorithms for Down’s Syndrome and Pre-eclampsia.

Before coming to Oxford, Paul previously held the role of senior research fellow in applied statistics at the Centre for Biostatistics, Bioinformatics and Biomarkers, Plymouth University Schools of Medicine and Dentistry. This role was fully funded by a National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Grant entitled "Clinical Trials Methods in Neurodegenerative Diseases". This grant was split into four distinct themes, and Paul was a senior modeller in theme 3: Statistical Methods. The focus of this research was the development of dynamic latent trait models to reflect individual differences in patient’s disease trajectories (stratified medicine).

Paul is currently a postdoctoral researcher working on the Wellcome Language and Reading Project.

Research interests

Paul’s research interests are broadly the application and development of statistical methodology to real applied problems. His specific areas of research include multivariate and Bayesian statistics, Extreme Value Theory, nonparametric and quantile regression.
